Reflecting on Your Personal Vision

by | Jan 9, 2017

Where would you like to be in 5 years? This is often a loaded question, since so many people have no idea of where they want to be in a year, let alone 5 years or longer. However, it’s a really important question, because it impacts your finances today. Let’s talk about that for a bit.

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” – James 4:13-16

The Personal Stuff

As it says in the passage we just read, we have to make long-term plans based on what the Lord wills, not just what we want. Pray about your future, such as where God wants you to live and so forth, and make plans accordingly. If you’re married, you know who you’ll be having breakfast with, right? Not necessarily true—divorce and death happen, as do accidents that require long-term care. Have you made plans for these types of situations?

If you plan to be in the same house, and haven’t heard a word from the Lord to move away, start a mission-field church, buy a new vehicle or give one away, and so on, then make plans to pay off what you have. Work on getting out of debt, using our system as mentioned all over the website. Be faithful and fruitful over the next 5 years!

Public and Private Contributions

What Kingdom plans do you want to further over the next 5 years? God wants us to be a light in this world, even financially, and that means supporting the things that He’s called you to finance. If you have no idea about what you’re supposed to be doing in this regard, pray! Make sure you’re tithing, give to your church whenever possible, and do good things in your community.

Over the next 5 years, make it your goal to get to a point where you can give more; do more. It should always be a feasible, reasonable act of service to want to do more for God’s Kingdom. This is true whether you consider your circle of influence to be 1 mile or 500 miles.

Final Thoughts

Some of us know our plans for the next 5 years from a financial standpoint; others are new to this idea and are (hopefully) putting prayerful thought and consideration into the matter as we start this New Year. Make 2017 a year that changes your life—so that 2022 is amazing!
